Being an invasive diagnostic subspecialty, interventional radiology (IR) has its roots in diagnostic radiology. IR is currently a therapeutic and diagnostic speciality that includes a variety of invasive and minimally invasive image-guided treatment procedures. A wide variety of conditions and organs, including but not limited to those affecting the vascular, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, genitourinary, pulmonary, musculoskeletal, and central nervous systems, are susceptible to image-guided therapeutic and diagnostic techniques. IR doctors evaluate and manage patients in relation to image-guided interventions as part of their practise, either individually or in partnership with other doctors. IR procedures are becoming a crucial component of healthcare.
