Lymphatic embolization is advised when aberrant lymphatic flow patterns develop or exist, resulting in "leaks" or fluid accumulation. Lymphatic embolization consists of two steps. To begin, diagnostic imaging is used to allow the surgeon to see the lymphatic system where the problems have been discovered. The surgeon will then gain access to the region of concern by utilizing x-rays to guide needles and maybe inject surgical glue, coils or plugs, or a combination of agents to assist stop the leaking that has been identified. Blood vessels transport blood throughout the body (arteries, capillaries and veins). There are also lymphatic vessels, which carry a clear or yellow fluid. Lymph vessels transport lymph fluid to veins, where it is reabsorbed into the bloodstream. The main lymph vessel is the thoracic duct, which transports lymph fluid from tissues and organs such as the liver and intestinal system back into the bloodstream. Damage to the thoracic duct, congenital anomalies, or extremely high venous pressures can all cause lymphatic flow irregularities and lymphatic fluid leaks into the chest, abdomen, or other body cavities.
