Central venous catheters and subcutaneous ports are frequently implanted by interventional radiology; there is some evidence that this method is superior to surgical implantation. Many different types of hemorrhage are treated with arterial embolization procedures, which are particularly effective for severe postpartum hemorrhage. Compared to surgical procedures, vascular interventions such as endovascular therapy of varicosities, acute limb ischemia, and pulmonary embolism are preferable. The choice of therapy is less obvious for deep vein thrombosis and chronic limb ischemia. Endovascular placement and removal of inferior vena cava filters is possible, but there is a high risk of problems that gets worse over time. Scrotal varicocele and uterine fibroids can both be effectively treated with vascular procedures, while the treatment of uterine fibroids is constrained by high recurrence rates. Percutaneous biopsies and drainage with image guidance have become commonplace.
