TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt) is a technique that connects two blood veins in your liver. If you have serious liver issues, you may require this treatment. This is not a surgical operation. An interventional radiologist uses X-ray guidance to do the procedure. A radiologist is a doctor who diagnoses and treats illnesses using imaging techniques. You will be asked to lie backward. Monitors will be attached to you to examine your heart rate and blood pressure. You will most likely be given local anaesthetic as well as sedative medication. This will relieve your discomfort and put you to sleep. You might also be sedated and pain-free with general anesthesia. A catheter (a flexible tube) is inserted through your skin into a vein in your neck by the doctor. This vein is known as the jugular vein. A small balloon and a metal mesh stent (tube) are attached to the catheter's tip. The catheter is guided into a vein in your liver by the doctor using x-ray equipment. The vein is then dyed (contrast material is injected) to make it more visible. To insert the stent, the balloon is inflated. When this happens, you may experience some discomfort.
