Procedures like carotid angioplasty and stenting unclog blocked arteries to replenish blood supply to the brain. They are often carried out to mitigate or avoid strokes. On each side of your neck are the carotid arteries. These are the principal blood vessels that give blood to your brain. As a result of carotid artery disease, which can obstruct or impede blood flow to the brain and cause a stroke, these blood vessels may become blocked with fatty deposits (plaque). In order to temporarily enlarge the blocked artery and allow blood to flow freely to your brain, the operation includes temporarily inserting and inflating a small balloon into the obstructed artery. Stenting is a technique that is frequently performed with carotid angioplasty. A tiny metal coil (stent) is inserted into the blocked artery during stenting. The stent keeps the artery open and lessens the possibility of it narrowing once more. When standard carotid surgery (carotid endarterectomy) is either not possible or too hazardous, carotid angioplasty and stenting may be done.
